History

In 1989, a group of seven women who had been members of other Junior Leagues created a new league to serve unmet community needs of Napa and Sonoma Counties. In October 1989, the work to establish the Napa-Sonoma Junior Service League was begun.

February 1990
The first general meeting took place with 44 active members.

September 1990
Initial research for a community project began.

In April of 1991
The membership voted to support the Child Assault Prevention Programs in Napa and Sonoma Counties as their first community project. The first provisional class of 19 women began in the fall of 1991.

Fall of 1992
Work on the lengthy application for affiliation with the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) began.

July 1993
AJLI application completed and submitted.

Fall 1993
The entire membership -- guided by the Cross Functional Team -- participated in external (community need) and internal (membership interest) assessments to determine a long-term focus or area of community need.

February 1994
Members selected Child Assault Prevention as their focus.

September 1994
The Cross Functional Team presents the Strategic Plan for membership approval. All committees develop their action plans for each goal to accomplish identified objectives.

March 1995
Valley of the Moon Children’s Center, a temporary holding facility for children removed from their homes, is chosen from 3 proposed projects.

April 1995
The league organizes the first Blue Ribbon Campaign for Sonoma County and sponsors the Napa County Campaign to raise public awareness of Child Abuse Prevention.

May 1995
AJLI Annual Conference is held in San Francisco and our organization becomes the 291st Junior League.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & FUNDRAISING HISTORY

Since its inception, the Junior League of Napa-Sonoma has reached out to become a key player in response to community needs. It has worked collaboratively with other agencies and organizations in the spirit of voluntarism.

 

12/91  Supported JLOEB with a donation to Fire Fund and Children at Risk

12/91  Toy Drive
, in collaboration with Catholic Charities

2/92  Specialties of the House, a fundraiser for the Volunteer Center of Napa Community which

 manages the Child Assault Prevention Project in that County

4/92  Canned

Food Drive
for seniors, in collaboration with the Salvation Army.

6/92  Family Support Center A Decorator Showcase, contributed volunteer hours as docents at the fundraising open house for improving the conditions of the loma1l homeless shelter.

9/9  2Pachanga, worked with the Napa Food Bank on their annual fundraiser.

10/92  Family Support Center remodeled and greatly improved their staff room.

11/92  The Giving Tree, in collaboration with the Sonoma Volunteer Center. Worked to provide holiday gifts for people with special needs

1992    Fall - Sarah's Maternity Home. Provided clothing to pregnant women and   new mothers

2/93  Specialties of the House

9/93  Hands across the County, in collaboration with the Sonoma Volunteer Center

 Worked on

 they're county project day; and volunteers helped build and plant a butterfly garden at

a local

elementary school.

10/93  Pachanga

11/93  The Giving Tree

12/93  Secret Santa, worked with a local radio station to coordinate holiday gifts for

 children in need.

2/94  Sweet Specialties and Suspense, worked with the Volunteer Center of Napa am a

 fundraiser for their programs including our projects

 

6/94  2,912 First, third and fifth-graders received CAPP workshops in Napa county during the

 93/94 school year and 3,487 children received workshops in Sonoma County during that

 same period.

4/95  10,000 Blue Ribbons were distributed in Sonoma County as the League, in collaboration

with the California Parenting Institute, launched Sonoma County's first Blue Ribbon Campaign.

 The League helped distribute 25,000 ribbons as a sponsor of the Napa Campaign.

4/96  100,000 Blue Ribbons were distributed throughout both counties, as the League continued

 its collaboration with CPI and sponsorship of the Napa campaign.

5/96  Valley of the Moon Center received a bookshelf and over 700 books to stock it.

8/96  Yountville Compadres, the League was a major donor for the event to raise funds for a

 bilingual teacher for a daycare center serving winery workers children.

10/96  Valley of the Moon Center Halloween pa11:y produced by League members for the

children in residence.

11/96  Increased revenues from Vendemmia by 20%.

12/96  New Member Class created nature ornaments for outdoor Christmas tree at Valley

of the Moon center.

3/97  Annual Rummage Sale.

4/97  Blue Ribbon Campaign -- provided 90,000 ribbons for Sonoma County and 70,000

 ribbons for Napa County.

7/97  Valley of the Moon Center received newly planted garden with fountain.

10/97  Valley of the Moon Center Halloween party produced by League members for the

 children in residence.

10/97  Annual Rummage Sale

10/97  Done in a Day Projects (DIAD)

1. Collaborated with Cancer Society in Breast Cancer Awareness

Month by wearing and distributing pamphlets to businesses, schools and

medical offices.

2. Fifteen League members worked with YWCS on behalf of Domestic Violence Prevention

 Month by distributing 250 wallet-size informational cards to shelters and counseling offices.

3. Assisted the Girl Scouts in their "Job Shadowing Program" by providing children, aged

 7-12, math tutoring over the phone or in person.

11/97  Valley of the Moon Center sweatshirt decorating and bead-stringing project.

12/97  Valley of the Moon Center toy drive.

2/98  Valley of the Moon rose crepe paper making party and Valentine's cookie party

2/98  Mercedes Benz give-away added as a new fundraiser.

3/98  Valley of the Moon decorative picture frame project.

3/98  Vendemmia - food and wine event with silent and live auction in caves a Clos

Pegas Winery.

4/98  Leapfrogs - a project sponsored by the girl scouts of Konocti for girls at Valley

of the Moon.

4/98  Valley of the Moon received stenciled silver, royal blue and yellow starsand

 planets to decorate the children1s bedroom doors.

4/98  Blue Ribbon Campaign - 30,000 bookmarks were distributed to school children 2,000

 bookmarks to adults, and 50,000 buttons and blue ribbons.

4/98  "Christmas in April" - Eight active members took part in painting, insulating and repairing

 the residences of homes inhabited by the financially needy.

5/98  The Living Room - a grant to support a drop-in center for single moms.

5/98  Valley of the Moon Center was provided a picnic lunch, games, kites and a

magician.

9/98  Sponsored DlAD with CASA golf tournament.

9/98  Nordstrom fashion event seminar held at Santa Rosa Gold and count1y club.

10/98  Annual rummage sale held at Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

2/99  Sponsored DIAD with the Living Room center.

3/99  Vin du Soleil, a food and wine event with live and silent auction as held at the Culinary

 Institute of America Greystone in Napa.

4/99  Blue Ribbon Campaign held in Sonoma and Napa counties.

10/99  JLNS sold 100 Mercedes tickets to benefit JLNS General Fund.

10/99  Bi-annual Rummage Sale held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

3/00  Vin du Soleil held at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone

 

4/00  First Blue Ribbon Community Day held at Coddingtown Mall.

4/01  Blue Ribbon Community Day held at Coddingtown Mall Non-profit booths free

 fingerprinting and photo ID, entertainment.

4/01  Blue Ribbon distribution to schools, businesses and individuals. Buttons, posters, bookmarks, coloring posters.

5/01  JLNS pledged $35,000 to Valley of the Moon Children's Home building campaign

 for the children's library. !twill have a plaque over the door indicating; that the room

 was given by the Junior League of Napa-Sonoma.

01/02  Membership organizes ten unique events and activities for the children at Valley

of the Moon

10/01  Rummage sale; Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

10/01  DIAD; "Monsters; Inc.," benefiting Valley of the Moon Foundation.

10/01  JLNS provides community assistance funds to the Junior Leagues of New York,

 Brooklyn and San Francisco in wake of 9/11 terrorist attacks.

10/01  Five members 4ttend fall SP AC conference in San Francisco. JLNS participated in

two other conferences throughout the year.

10/01  JLNS distributes program funding approved in the prior year.

11/01  JLNS launches product sales program, marketing JLNS dipping oil and balsamic

 vinegar.

2/02  DlAD; Valentines Day party at The Living Room, Santa Rosa.

3/02  Fourth annual Vin du Soleil; Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, St. Helena.

3/02  JLNS participates in statewide DIAD in celebration of 100 years of The Junior League.

3/02  DIAD "Hearts for Children" Gala benefiting CASA - Sonoma.
